Is bariatric surgery an option for me?

If you want to lose your excess weight, bariatric surgery may be an option for you. Usually BMI*, or Body Mass Index, is the main factor that decides eligibility for this surgery.

The following are the BMI criteria for surgery:1

  • a BMI greater than 37.5 kg/m2 or
  • a BMI greater than 32.5 kg/m2 with obesity-related conditions
  • unable to lose weight by weight loss methods
  • between 18 and 65 years of age

If you do fulfil these criteria, consult a bariatric surgeon to know more.
